Can you restart it immediately after it dies or do you have to wait? And if
so how long will it run for the second time? Has the car sat for a while?

I don't think this sounds like ignition because if the problem as you
describe it were electrical then it would have to be heat related and I
just don't think 3 minutes is enough time to make that happen.

It sounds to me like it's fuel related. Like the engine is running out of
fuel. If the car sits alot the idle passages in the carb can gum up. When
restricted like that the car may run with the choke closed because of the
air restriction and high vacuum, but as soon as the choke opens the
restricted passages can't supply enough fuel and the engine dies. Next time
take the air cleaner off and watch the choke and see if it dies when it
opens. If it starts to stumble quickly put your hand over the choke to
block most of the opening. If it runs better then you found you problem.
The carb will need a good cleaning.

The engine on my '61 Imperial starts fine, runs for about 3 minutes, then
diesels and cuts off. Does this sound like spark plug wires?
Would appreciate any ideas on the diagnosis of this one.
