Hello All,
Yeah, Mopar collector's guide has probably done that (or a similar
article) about a dozen times in the last 10 years.
I knew that car was in process of restoration, just didn't know how far
along it was.
It was truly General #1. The one that is the Hero car was created
afterward, around the 3-4 (depending on who you talk to) episode, and
then was used exclusively from that point forward. This is the car
Wayne Wooten owns today. BTW- it really is just a plain 383 4bbl
automatic car, with very few options.
Some stupid Dukes trivia-
-All jump cars were weighed at their 4 corners and then balanced.
That's how they flew flat.
it took a couple years to figure that out though, that's why early
episodes commonly show the General going nose down in a jump.
-They couldn't ship wrecked/destroyed Generals by flatbed out of the
production site- too many times drivers of the semi's reported seeing
kids in cars crying at the sight of destroyed Generals. So they were
shipped out in enclosed carriers.
-The first few Generals were R4 red, but when viewed on film they
appeared orange. This is because R4 is red in the normal light, but
Orange in strong/artifical light or in the dark. So they didn't try to
make them be red on film, painted them orange after that- the paint was
cheaper! Car #1 you mention was R4 Red. I'm sure the restoration
painted it orange (some say City of Omaha Orange, which Dodge had used
on the 68 Bengal's Chargers, so they knew the color would work, and as a
municipal code paint, had to be CHEAP!)
-It didn't matter which engine the donor General's had. The sound you
heard was a 440 recording.
-Though they claim no RT's were used, the closing sequences on several
episodes would show a very clear RT badge on the rear quarter, as well
as crossed flags (both checkered) on the dutchman panel (under the rear
window) This is commonly missed on many clones because it appeared so
infrequently on the show.
-Toward the end of production they ran out of 69 Chargers, so they
started painting/jumping AMC Ambassadors, the 69 Charger grilles/bumpers
literally bolted on. On film you couldn't really tell unless you
looked carefully at the car in mid-air, and at impact.
-The guys who jumped the General on the TV show came out of retirement
to jump the General for the movie. Seems no one else knew how to do it
properly.
-Finally, if the Donor General didn't have a brown interior, no problem,
they simply SPRAY BOMBED the interior with Rustoleum!
Yes, I know too much about such a piece of Campy (and let's face it
Crappy) 70's television.....
OK- enough stupid trivia,
back to our Finned Masterpiece Theater.

I just picked up a current issue of the Mopar Collectors guide and it
has a neat article about Charger no 1 which was used for the intro
jump scene and in the 4th episode with petty blue paint before going
into retirement in a grove of trees.
It has just been restored to original condition. Well at least a
couple of original parts are still there. After removing the rust not
too many part are original.
Was a neat article.

Hello All,
Just looked at that crazy auction.
The only part that even looks legit is the John Schnieder (Bo Duke)
was the seller.
What really floors me is that it isn't even a General that was used
in the TV Show. It was a clone built by John!
The real General 'Hero' car is owned by Wayne Wooten of the Dodge
Charger Registry.
It was sold to him by Warner Brothers in the late 80's along with the
last remaining 50 'real' General Lees. All 50 were jump cars, and
most too far gone to save.
The car that Wayne has is the one the Bo and Luke always drove up in,
and when there was a shot with the hood up, this was the car. That's
why it is called the 'hero' car.
Anyway-
$9 mil for a clone????
How many do they want??
Charles.

According to the stats, some of the bidders have only bid on a
couple other items the past 30 days...so looking at it that way, 33%
seems fairly reasonable...
I still don't see how that car will bring that kind of money, even
at Barrett-Jackson, but oh well.

What's going on with this? The top four [anonymous] bidders have
between 2% and 33% of their last 30 days bidding with this seller!
#2 highest bidder has had 3 bid retractions lately.
Is this just an example of shill bidding and publicity?
