Stuff like this has happened to me.  In one case some years ago, I flat out 
asked the guy why he had lied to my direct questions on the phone.  He said 
he had to get people there first, then figured buyers fever would enable him 
to talk me into it.  I.E. as far as he was concern, he was some kind of 
great manipulator or salesman and I was a dumba@@.  I've gotten to where I 
don't even talk to them when this happens.  Same reason I never bother 
further with parts at a swap meet which have no prices marked.  Either the 
guy knows he's asking way too much and you'll never even talk to him if you 
saw it marked, then he can manipulate you like above, or he plans to play it 
by ear and size you up when you ask the price and see what you'll tolerate.  
Cynical yes, gotten that way after so many years of dealing with such 
people.
