Welcome from another green '55 DeSoto owner!
On your sheet metal parts, if you don't find something closer, try Wildcat
Auto in Sandy, Oregon. They have a website. They also have my old parts
car that has solid floors and fenders, but it's a four door. Keep in mind
that the sheet metal you're seeking is the same on '56 models.
To answer your other questions:
1-What is the correct gloss and texture of the paint on the metal
dashboard top? Flat with small round bumps. After not being able to
duplicate it, I glued matching correct cordagrain upholstery material on
the dash, which looks better than anything else I've seen. [Padded dash
was available in '56 but not '55.]
2-What is the correct color lettering on the spark plug wire covers? Most
restored examples I've seen are done in red, but I've uncovered evidence
that, as to the Firedome series, black is the correct color. The covers
are silver with black letters on Firedomes and red on Fireflites. Letter
kits are available.
3-What is the correct width whitewall tire? Many restored examples I've
seen appear to be overly wide when compared to factory photos. I'm
guessing that @ 1/2 inches is about right. Any ideas? 3" is about right
on the 7.60 x 15. The originals were generally Goodyears as Chrysler had
a long-standing relationship with Goodyear.
For any 55 Firedome owners with green interiors, I have a mystery
regarding my trim code and upholstery. Does anyone else have a green
interior with a 472 trim code? It's not in the dealer album and my
upholstery, although original, does not match the swatch in the dealer
album. Does anyone know anything about this?
I have a Lexington green & cove green Sportsman interior. There was
different upholstery for the Special hardtop and different yet for the
sedan. You may be looking at one of those others. If you can scam and
foward a page I'd like to see it.
BTW, the upholstery cloth was very poor on these cars, besides being ugly in
some cases like the Sportsman. That's one area where a substitution is
desirable.
