They are "ok" I wouldn't say they are great, but they are in much better
shape then my old one. It was worn much more. The parts car I took it off
of, was not a high mileage car and has been parked at least 20 years.
But this give me time to look for a real good one or an NOS one without
laying up the car.

That's certainly good news.
How does the condition of the lower/hidden gear teeth compare
to that of the upper-exposed teeth, on the latch?

I got the door fixed. It took some surgery with an air body saw and a big
ole screwdriver/prybar. I had to go through the outside handle opening,
cut some sliced into the mechanism, the break it apart with a bar. After
removal, I see what happened.
The inside door handle presses down on a tab inside the mechanism, that
tab broke and fell inside the mechanism, jamming it up.

Examine the replacement mechanism that you have. Determine what has to
move, and in which direction, in order for the star wheel to rotate
freely. THAT is how you will get your door open.
IF you send me a clear photo (or post it your thread on the FL Message
Board) of the spare mechanism and I'll see if I can figure it out, since
my only reference is 57-9, which may be completely different.

I went to get into my 56 Plymouth today and the door wouldn't open.
After I got home, I was able to get the door panel off and the outer
door handle.
Something is broken in the latch assembly so when you pull on the outer
handle or the inner handle, the mechanism moves, but whatever piece
inside that mechanism that unlocks the star wheel doesn't move, so the
door won't open.
I have another mechanism to put in which is how I figured out something
inside that mechanism is broke.
Any ideas? I've been messing with it for almost 2 hours now.
While climbing in and out like Bo Duke would be fun, I'm sure it would
lose it's appeal quite soon.
