Burlap with wire reinforcement is the original substrate, they now offer coated burlap that adds some more foundation, foam density and thickness should be taken into account when choosing a desired support rate as well. I have several modifications I make depending upon the application.  

If you attempt this, you'll need a minimum 1/4 hp walking foot upholstery sewing machine, I use a 1/3 hp singer 95-10. Pick up a book on upholstery,  mopar patterns include french seams, overlap and trace, and piping junctions

I am researching re-upholstering the seats in my ’56 Dodge Custom Royal.  I believe I am foolish enough to attempt this myself.  Here is a list of novice questions.  Can anyone help?

 

1.     Seat construction materials – My car was poorly re-upholstered.  They (unknown upholsterer) used a sheet of burlap to cover the springs.

·         Would webbing be better, stronger?

·         Are there synthetic materials that would be more durable than burlap?

2.    I think I want to replace the cotton padding with foam.
