[FWDLK] Tracing my cars 'Roots'

I am having a hard time tracing the history of my car. I bought it from CA,
so I started with the DMV. They sent me a form to fill out for a vessel
report and I sent it back. The result was a computer printout with very
little detail, had dates of transfer and names at least. When I called the
main office back they were basically useless. I called a branch office for
advice on how to get more info. They were the most helpful! They were able
to confirm that the car came from out of state in 1988 and provided cities
of registration. I have called information and used internet white pages to
try to find the 3 CA owners of the car. I was able to track down the middle
owner which has provided some great info. Unfortunately he did not keep the
records and does not know much about the previous owner and the guy he sold
it to. The middle owner was the one who switched the engine. He bought it
with a thrown rod in the 6 cyl and replaced it with a V8 out of a 55 4dr
Plymouth. The car was black/red when he had it (still trying to find out
what the orig colors were since the build card was 699, special color). So
basically, I know the general area and years that the car resided in CA. I
also know, thanks to Chrysler Historical Foundation, that the car was
originally shipped to Glendale, AZ. The DMV in AZ had no record of the car
at all on their computer. What are the best steps to take at this point?
Contact AZ again and see if they can do a microfiche trace? Call states
around AZ & CA and see if the vin pops up somewhere? Is there any site or
service on the internet that keeps this kind of data? Help!!????

Summary:

Shipped to Glendale, AZ in 1955.
Registered in CA in June 1988 to first CA owner.
Sold to second CA owner in June 1990.
Sold to third CA owner in Sept 1994.
I recently bought it from a dealer who said they got it approx 1 year ago
and intended on restoring it themselves. Got into Volkswagens instead.

See ya, Joe.
