Jim,
The only 318 available in 1957 is the Fury V-800 engine and it was optional
in all lines for this year.  To identify it as such, the cast number is on
the front of the block (on the passenger side) right below the head and this
number is 1630229.  On the drivers side front block below the head is the
engine serial number (in smaller letters) which would start out as
FP31-XXXXXX.  The 301 came in 2 and 4 barrel versions and the most common
V-8 that year (277's were still available in Plazas, maybe Savoys) and its
serial numbers began as P31.  Hope this helps (tho possible you have a '58
or later poly 318 in there but serial numbers would start with LP for '58,
MP for '59 etc).
