Re: [FWDLK] How Fast?

Checking my old Motor Trend issues; the Feb. '57 issue did a special
cover story called "3 Road Tests, Hot 57s - Buick Century, Dodge D-500
and Olds Super 88". Their results were:

Buick Century (57) 0-60.......10.1 .(56) 0-60..........9.6
Dodge D-500 (57) 0-60.........9.4 (56) 0-60..........9.5
Olds Super 88 (57) 0-60.........9.7 (56) 0-60........10.8

Buick quarter mile ...(57) 17.6 sec @ 81mph, (56) 17.1 sec @ 80.5mph
Dodge quarter mile (57) 17.2 sec @ 79mph, (56) no test for 1/4
mile in 56
Olds quarter mile ....(57) 17.4 sec @ 79.4mph, (56) 17.8 sec @ 77mph

The other MT 57 road tests summary showed the fastest 57s to be the
blown T-Bird, blown Stude Golden Hawk and Dodge D500. Interesting old
stuff!

The March, '59 issue of MT also did a drive test of the 300E with the
following results:

quarter mile ...(59) 0-60........ 8.2 sec [avg. of best 4 of 8 runs]
(58) 0-60........9.7sec [per Chrys Eng.]

Brian
D500s in still frozen MI!

Found an old edition of CAR EXCHANGE from June 1979. Inside were the 0-60
times and the 1/4 mile times from cars of the50's. Motor Trend's report of
the 48 cars showed the following:

Slowest quarter.......55 Stude Champion/6 22.0 seconds
Quickest quarter......57 Pontiac Super Chief 16.6 seconds
Slowest 0-60...........55 Stude again 20.6 seconds
Quickest 0-60..........57 Pontiac again 8.7 seconds

How'd we do:
55 New Yorker...........18.0 quarter
55 DeSoto Fireflight....19.2
55 Belvedere 20.3
55 Custom Royal 20.3
56 Fireflight 17.8
56 Custom Royal 18.6
56 Belvedere 18.9
56 New Yorker 18.8
57 Custom Royal D500 17.2
57 New Yorker 17.3

Sort of underwhelming as the horsepower race was yet to gather sufficient
steam. Larry Jett
