Can't help too much with the price of shipping, but I can give you a tip on
packaging.

Carpet stores always have tons of the cardboard tubes that carpet is wrapped
around.  These tubes are light, strong (about 1/2" thick walls), and usually
free.  You can cut them to size with a saw, and tape the ends to make a
great shipping carton.

I also use them for storage of long pieces in my garage.
