I had a similar sounding problem with a '59 Chrysler.  I did these things:

1. Take a lock cylinder out of the door and have a locksmith make a key for
it.  It should fit your ignition.

2. I fought the distributor for a long time until I realized that the points
pivot was frozen.  Even though the points opened and closed, it was only
because the arm was bending.  After I took the plate off and freed up the
pivot, it ran just fine.
