[FWDLK] DeSoto tank filler tube clamp

I'm trying to help a guy with the gas tank of his 57 DeSoto.  I know a lot
about that car, but have never replaced a tank.  The shop manual says to
install the filler tuber into the "o-ring", then install the o-ring
clamp.  What is this clamp?  My friend claims he doesn't have one.  The
PARTS book lists a clamp, but says "use as required" in a footnote.  What
does this clamp look like, and how critical is it?
