Re: [FWDLK] Trans gaskets

Speaking about gaskets, here's a heads up on the powerflite pan gasket. I
purchased a gasket from Northwest transmission parts (got the # for this
place from this list). The torque spec for the pan gasket in the manual is
12-17lb/ft. So I torqued it to 15 lb/ft and split the gasket at every bolt
hole. The thing is the torque spec in the manual is for the original style
gasket which is leather or some other harder material. For a cork or
composite gasket like is available nowadays the spec should be lower. I
almost never torque a trans pan gasket with a torque wrench, but I figured
I'd do it "right" to eliminate any possibilty of leaks. I guess thats what
I get for trying to do it right!

I have to say though that Northwest was very good. They replaced it free of
charge. I also suggested they put a note in with the package from now on to
warn people.
