Greg, I'm not sure on a '58, but on a '57, a few inches is all you need to get the ignition switch out.  When you pull the whole cluster forward, there's a small hole or notch in the bottom of the unit.  You can insert a long, thin flat-bladed screwdriver up into it and loosen a screw which holds the ignition switch in place, then it will come right out without removing the whole cluster further.

Of course, that's after unscrewing the bezel around the face of the switch.
