I'll bet your friend doesn't live in a cold climate and get a straight 30
weight engine started below zero!
I've heard some really bad things about Pennzoil. Never used it myself. The
only thing I can say from experience is an experiment I once saw. A
synthetic oil dealer had 8 different brands of oil sitting on a block of dry
ice (-40 deg F) with paint stirring sticks in them so you could feel how
thick they got. All would flow to varying degrees. Except the Pennzoil. It
looked like a carameled apple on a stick.

I use 10w30 Valvoline in my 59 Plymouth 318 with no problems (drive it
everyday). I have a friend who has never changed over to the multi
viscostiy oils in his cars. He continues to use straight 30 weight Pennzoil
in his cars. When the subject comes up he points to his 72 Olds with 225,000
miles. That engine (455) does sound sweet. He also has a '61 Chevy
(original family car) that has always used the straight weight oil. John
