Re: [FWDLK] 1957 Correct Numbers Matching Engine Versus 1958

Chrysler Corporation began the switch from the division letters P, D, S and
C to the engineering department's letter year prefix during the 1957 model
year. It became corporate wide for 1958. This change occured with the
adoption of a corporate line of engines, instead of four divsion lines.

The 1957 model year was K, in 1958 it was L and 1959 was M,

For a 1957 engine, the following are the prefixes :
Plymouth 6 (230) : P30
Plymouth V8 (277 or 301) : P31
Plymouth Fury V8 (318) : FP31
Dodge 6 / DeSoto Firesweep 6 (230) : D72 (early) / KDS6 (from 01/20/57)
Dodge V8 / DeSoto Firesweep V8 (325) : KDS
DeSoto Firedome V8 (341) : S25
DeSoto Fireflite V8 (341) : S26-
DeSoto Adventurer V8 (345) : S26A
Chrysler Windsor V8 (354) : WE57
Chrysler Saratoga V8 (354) : LE57
Chrysler New Yorker V8 (392) : NE57
Chrysler 300C V8 (392) : 3NE57
Imperial V8 (392) : CE57

In those days, the VIN was attached to the body and to the chassis only. It
was not stamped on the engine and transmission until 1968, so you cannot
determine what is, or is not, "numbers matching" on a 1958 car.
