A few years ago, shortly after purchasing my 59 Plymouth Sport Fury, the
transmission in it broke. Screen inside pan was full of metal filings. No
idea what kind of fluid was in trany at that time. Found 59 Ply parts car
with good cast iron torqueflite (actually took a chance on it and trany
turned out to be perfect) and installed that one and drained old fluid out
and installed new fluid. I used Dexron III (upon recommendations from this
list). I've put almost 10,000 miles on this trany since then with no
problems. Shifts very smooth. You can feel it going into 2nd a little bit,
but going into 3rd is so smooth you don't feel it (I prefer the smooth
shift). Anyway, Dexron III is working for me. I also put new seals in my
power steering box and use Dexron III for that also.   John Z
