Re: [FWDLK] replacing the rear seal on a 318

Here's what they do with G.M. rope seals. Remove the lower bearing cap and remove the old seal.  Make up a tool, preferably from hardwood that is the same shape as the channel for the seal.  Drive the old seal still up in the upper cap on each end to compress it.  Cut off pieces of the old seal from the bottom cap and work it up into the new space. Trim the excess flush with the cap.  Install the new seal in the lower half and trim it.  Put a little silicon seal on the exposed ends of the gasket and reassemble.  If you pick up any manual like Haynes about G.M. cars.  Like Buick or Olds with the V-8's they will give a better explaination. While not perfect its a good alternative to pulling the crank.  Do the best you can the first time.  It's not really repeatable.
