Interesting. That rational makes sense. For what it is worth, I know the NOS
body panels for a '46 Pontiac I owned were black.

This topic has visited this list from time to time. As I recall, gray, or
some shade they of seemed to be the most common trunk color. I think it was
mentioned that the paint used was a mixture of all the left over paint, thus
the color. Not sure if that if correct, but that is what I remember being
mentioned.

I'll bet because I've seen this before that the trunk lids were replaced by
the dealer due to improper fit from the factory. ( Remember the problem
with the trunks leaking? ) The underside and topside were painted to keep
the parts from rusting up while sitting in the warehouse. After placement
the outside was then painted the color of the car.
