This has always been in the back of my mind, just set it up with two
systems.  Leave the original in place for whatever is still working good at
6 volts, and add an alternator and 12 volt battery for whatever needs a
boost or is too new to use 6.  Thats what this guy did

Dave,
What you're looking for is called a "series-parallel switch" a thing common
to the heavy truck industry. You could probably use one from a truck(there
are possibly smaller versions out there for automotive use) but you will
need to mount two six volt batteries in the car.
