I don't know about when bidding on cars, but when bidding on any item with a
reserve, if your maximum bid meets or exceeds the reserve, eBay will
effectively bid you against the reserve immediately so that the reserve will
be met, and you will have the high bid at the reserve, though I seem to
think I've seen it happen right at the end also (with no additional bids
from anyone else).
