If you do pull the gas tank and decide to keep it, POR 15 works wonders on the exterior. My 1980 Dodge shorty van gas tank had 13 pin holes in it.  I cleaned off loose rust and dirt, gave it a coat of POR - while tacky - applied fiber glass cloth and another coat of POR 15. That was 10-12 years ago and tank is still in good condition.  John Z  Mosinee, WI
