Re: [FWDLK] Vital info about your car's cruise control, ABS

I agree with Dave on the ABS.
Back in HS my friend got a new BMW probably a 318 or 325 at that time, one
of the first with 4 wheel ABS. We took it out in the snow and ice and
"practiced" stopping with the abs, It managed to stop the car far better
then we were able to without ABS. The car knew it was sliding when we
stomped on the brakes and it just modulated the wheels until it was able to
slow it all down.

Nothing is fool proof but since have to be on the road with all the fools I
hope they all have as many of these devices ass possible.

Ray,

I don't agree. I have ABS on my daily driver and it works great on ice and
snow. I have never experienced a situation as you described ("all 4 wheels
are sliding on the ice, the ABS thinks you're parked, so no brake control").
One tire always seems to have some grip. But even if it did happen, it would
be just the same as non-ABS (all 4 wheels locked and sliding) and would be
over after sliding a short distance for one wheel to grip differently than
the rest. The ABS never turns off the brakes, just pulses the wheels that
are turning slower (sliding) than the fastest (griping).

As soon as the car started to act crazy, the Brake pedal is stomped on.
This shuts off the Cruise. That problem is over for now. New problem,
the front wheels are now locked up and you can't steer. Which brings
us to ABS
Of more concern is the modern cars with ABS. ABS is bad on ice. It
requires at least one wheel to be getting some traction. ABS works by
comparing the speeds of all 4 wheels and adjusting the brake action
accordingly. If all 4 wheels are sliding on the ice, the ABS thinks
you're parked, so no brake control. You'll just slide until a wheel
grabs traction.

As to going down hill with cruise, some downshift the trans to keep the
set speed.
