I just installed a stereo radio conversion in my 56 Dodge. The shop that did
the conversion to my 56 Dodge Town & Country radio is S & M Electro-Tech,
763-780-2861, http://www.turnswitch.com The sound is terrific. I replaced
the original speakers with the speakers they sell. These speakers are custom
made for this conversion, which puts out 22 watts per channel. This is way
too much power for the old speakers. The new speakers come in both 6x9 and
5x7 sizes. They are not the old technology large dual magnet speakers shown
on the
web site, but use a much smaller new technology ceramic magnet that is 10
times more powerful for its size. These new magnets are the same size as the
factory originals. I highly recommend this shop.
There are numerous shops around the country that convert old radios to a
modern stereo. They ALL use the conversion parts that come from this one
source: http://www.antiqueautomobileradio.com/ This web site has detailed
info on the conversion specs. They also have a variety of speakers.

Subject: [FWDLK] WARNING Fitting a new speaker in dash
After a long quest, I finally found the right 5x7 speaker to fit in
the dash of my '57 Dodge. At least, that's what I thought... It has
the mounting holes in the right position, and it's not one of these
new shiny colors, like metal flake blue or red, just good old plain
black.
At first, I couldn't get it positioned under the dash (I don't want it
mounted ON the dash), so I had to loosen the complete dash, to pull it
from the fire wall, which gave me enough clearance to position the
speaker under the hole in the dash.
After doing all that, I found out that it doesn't fit anyway, because
the magnet is to wide. It interferes with the lower part of the dash,
which is curved inwards....
How dumb can you be? I should have made these measurements to begin
with...
