Re: [FWDLK] 3 speed manual trans question

Ron/List - I misread it.  It didn’t say where John Lyons was from.  I guess I assumed he was from NY but that’s where he found the car.  But it did say that he did sell the 2nd car and still has one 300G. As far as being more valuable – usually when there is only a few of anything and they don’t make ‘em anymore, someone out there is willing to pay big bucks for it, imho.  On a related note – take a celebrity car – more often than not, just because a famous actor/actress/athlete, etc. owned and drove a certain car, that car usually goes for double what it would otherwise when sold.  I guess when you enter such a car in car shows you can put on window sign, “previously owned by ……….”  or  “factory 3 speed manual – 1 of 5 known to exist”.  That sort of thing really draws interest.  I think people are willing to spend a few extra bucks for cars like these and put extra effort into restoring them.  Not me though, I’m happy with my plain jane Sport Fury of which is 1 of 17,867 and as far as I know no famous person ever owned it.  The name on the plaque on glove box door is “Little Doc Clark” and nobody’s heard of him/her.

John -

Sounds like OCW got a few facts confused. John Lyons lives here in CT and sold the second (NY) stick 300G car, while continuing on the resto of the first one. While the manual tranny is a *rare* option, does anyone think that it necessarily make the car significantly more *valuable* ?

Talking about Chrysler manual trannys - In the latest Old Cars Weekly paper dated Jan 12, 2006, there is an article about the ’61 Chrysler 300-G with the 3-speed manual transmission. According to article only 40 were built with this tranny and only 4 were known to exist until a fellow named John Lyons from upstate NY  found a fifth one.  He now owns/owned  2 of them. Article goes on to say that he recently sold the car to another 300 club member and restoration of this rare car is well underway. Article shows a picture of shift handle being floor-mounted.  Car was found in Stanfordville, NY where it was parked for more than 30 years.
