Shouldn't be that difficult to remove steering column. I'll
describe the process for removing a p/s column below. If you have manual
steering, it's probably a similar procedure.
Remove panel from floorboard, including 5-sided
rubber-over-metal piece that fits over steering column and bolts to removeable
panel and floorboard itself.
Remove steering wheel using steering wheel puller
tool.
Remove power steering hoses from connections at steering
box.
Loosen steering column from dash by removing two large
Phillips head bolts that hold collar to dash.
Disengage steering knuckle from steering linkage using pickle
fork and 3 or 4lb sledgehammer.
There are three long bolts that hold steering column to frame.
Pay attention to orientation of each bolt as to whether the nut is on the left
or right, and also where the washers are located and how they are positioned.
There is also a wedge-shaped spacer that is positioned by one of the bolts. Pay
attention to that as well. Since I assume that your engine is still in the car,
the bolt removal will have to be done from underneath. A digital camera would be
a valuable tool here.
Since the steering column is rather heavy, you may need an
assistant to support it as the last bolt is removed. They can lift the column
out from the driver's seat area.

Hello All,
First I want to thank all of you who
responded to my questions. I really appreciate it, some of those answers were
well thought out and researched. It will make things go with ease
and confidence. Second, I owe all of you an apology for not responding back to
your emails. Unfortunately, last week, my girlfriends grandmother passed away.
I stayed with her throughout the week and helped her out with whatever I
could. I will make an effort this week to reply to all of your emails.
Now for another question, how
do you get the steering column out of the car? The body shop is trying to
figure this one out. I'm thinking they can unbolt the panel at the
firewall/floor board and lift the body over the column. Is there a way to
separate the column for the steering box? Let me know any of you frame off
guys out there. Oh, almost forgot, I still haven't heard of a good
rocker panel source. Any leads? Thanks again for all of your time and trouble.
