I had always heard that you should not place a battery on concrete but thought it an old tale.  Well, couple of weeks back I had a marine battery sitting on the floor with a very good NAPA dynamic charger and after a day went to the shop, smelled something and it was that battery smoking.  I cut power to building and let everything cool off and clear.  I come to find out that the battery had grounded itself to the concrete.  This also explains to me now what a 6 V I was charging for my 55 Dodge was discharged after sitting on a 3 amp charger for several days.
