Hi Ron,
What I normally do is take two scrap bolts that are about 4 inches long and thread them into the holes in the dampner that are used the attach the main belt drive pulley.  I then take about a 3ft long prybar and wedge it between them to keep the dampner from moving while I torque the crank bolt.
This is the best way I have found to do it if you have limited space to get to the dampner.  No need to get to the flywheel or have someone hold something for you, or danger of popping off the dampner while wedging something behind it.  I don't think you would get a true torque reading that way anyway.
