I sold a 1929 Chevy truck two years ago with original Stovebolt 6 cylinder engine and updraft carb.  The “air cleaner” was a round open can with fixed vanes and a pipe extending a few inches out the bottom.  The idea was that the turbulence would cause the dirt to fall out the bottom.  Seemed a little “weak” to me as a design but this one still ran.

I had a Ford "8N" tractor that used a similar design as a pre-filter to remove dirt before the air went into an oil bath cleaner.  Dirt was deposited into a mason jar so you could see results.  It removed quite a lot of dirt.
