[FWDLK] driveable dreams

Anyone else gotten the latest issue of Hemmings Classic Car?

The major thrust of the issue is driveable dreams or to put it another way Unrestored collector cars. They really help you see the benefits of just having a nice unrestored original car and not a restored one.

Pitted potmetal and rust along with worn upholstery are ok!!

Neat issue with a lot to think about.

John has the right outlook. The '55 Dodges have beautiful lines, are
innovative, high performance and definitely not bellybutton cars. Show your
Coronet with pride and listen to the oohs and ahhs when they spot the
granny-impaler on the dash, the hemi under the hood and the three-color
paint job!

I will be very interested in all the replies to this question. My ol 55 has plenty of pitted pot metal, and a 4 door Coronet is not a car that I want to
spend thousands and thousands on rechroming. I have left it pitted for now
because after all I do drive it quite a bit. I priced one taillight to be
rechromed and it came to 235.00 cdn. taxes included. I will never win a show
with this car, but you know what, When I drive into a Show and Shine with
the windows down and listen to all the guys saying,(Now This is A Cruiser)or
(Check Out That Dodge) it makes me feel good.
Not that I don't feel envious when I look at all the 55-56-57 chebys with
all the new chrome from Taiwan, but that the parts on my car are 1955 and
she still looks pretty good.

OK - the horror of us old-car fans. Pitted pot-metal trim. What can
be done other than replace [nearly impossible in some cases, these ain't
cheby and ferds that everything is reproduced] or pay $$$ to the few
places that replate it.
In this modern age there should be a metalized bondo that can simply
be used to fill and smooth trim pieces and be chrome-plated. Or at
least a chrome spray that looks real good [don't laugh].
