Jim, since you have a D500, you have a unique situation, where is not
quite enough room , to remove the oil filter (outer-)cannister from
between the inner fender, & the valve cover.
What I, & others do, is lift the 'cannister' up-and-over-to-the-side,
kinda laying it over to rest on the side of the inner fender, while "we"
slide out the inner filter-piece. Piece of cake.
The thin filter rubber base-gasket I inspect, but, usually RE-USE it,
because it has taken a good 'seat' , and is in perfect condition..
The only thing you can not do, is pre-fill the filter, but you could
soak it, before installation (but I never bother to do that, as I drive
the car, to get the oil hot, before I replace the oil, & there's
'fresh' oil on the cylinders, and bearings when I re-start the car).

Curious about how you all change your oil filter!
I can't seem to get that cup holding the internal filter out of the engine
compartment, either way. Removed the Valve Cover once, because I thought
that might help, but it didn't. Rockers were still I the way.
And at the underside the torsion bar is in the way.
And on top of that, I used a FRAM C134PL which apparently had a to fat
rubber ring, causing difficulties screwing the filter housing back on, while
having to positioning my body in the most strange ways, to reach there.
After kicking a bucket and slamming my fence several times, I Eventually
turned that rubber ring upside down, and it screwed in the first time a
tried. Don't know how soon the oil will by-pass the filter now, but I really
don't want to have to change that oil filter too many times!
Any similar experiences, and better experiences with other brand??

Do I "give" a rat's-rear-end about SYNTHETIC motor oil? Heck [sic]
no !!!!!
Do I use Valvoline multi-viscosity, & change the oil filter several
times, per year? Yes.
