While not a sheet metal application the 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk used a fiberglass fin applique with a vinyl molding to conceal the parting line. Nowhere near as acceptable but within their limited cost allowance.
The Dodge process which was extremely well executed. I remember even when introduced we thought it was just part of the quarter.
