Re: [FWDLK] '56 D-500 2x4 Air Cleaners

Jim,

I suspect the majority of 2x4 intake systems were provided over-the-counter.
The hardware was not generally available until a few months after the D500
was released. I have also heard that the 2x4 system was delivered in the
trunk, uninstalled. But it is also probable that some of the D500-1s were
shipped with the carbs in place, at least later in the year.

Subject: [FWDLK] '56 D-500 2x4 Air Cleaners

Hey Guys,

I have a friend with two (2) 1956 Dodge D-500 two-door sedans. One
belonged to his late father and was purchased new. Both cars saw a lot of
action on the drag strip back in the day. His father was an old dirt track
racer and was friends with the Petty's. Back in the late '50's or early
'60's he purchased a '56 Dodge 2x4 intake from the Petty's that had once
been on one of their race cars. He has the intake and carbs, but no air
cleaners. Did any of these '56 D-500's make it out of the factory with two
fours, or was this only an aftermarket racer upgrade? If it was available
as a factory set-up, does anyone have any photos of the air cleaners? He
has been looking for quite awhile.

Thanks,

Jim Pennington
