Re: [FWDLK] FW: '60 Desoto chevrons

The problem isn't so much the $350, it's more that my lenses are in perfect condition (minus the chevrons) so I'll probably just make something myself and put that $350 somewhere that its needed like the engine or rebuilding the inside of the trunk... !

I once made a set from aluminum bar stock.  I spent several weeks of evenings bending and filing them to shape before polishing them.  I think Roger is right, these things literally "jumped" off the cars.  As a onetime serious 60 owner, I have always paid close attention, and in dozens upon dozens of these I have seen, only one car had a few of the chevrons still in place, and it was a really pampered, low miles car.

It seems a lot to pay for simple plastic castings, but really, how tough is it to raise $350 ?  A week of pizza delivering or lawn mowing will easily put new lenses in your car and help a guy like George stay in the business of making new parts for our cars.

Thanks for the info Roger.  I actually saw George's on the bigfins site.  The problem is my lenses are in perfect condition so it seems like such a waste to spend $400 bucks, especially when the car is going to end up being a mild Kustom.  I nhad an idea to just paint in the grooves for the chevrons then use some chrome little screw in bullets for the tab holes...  I think it might look pretty cool.

George Laurie, PO Box 114, Tewantin, Qld, Australia, georgelaurie@xxxxxxxxxxx

1960 DeSoto taillight lenses, $350/pair including chevrons and reflectors, as of February 2006.

The chevrons were held on with glue and a couple little tabs and some wishful thinking.  They might have stayed on the car for ninety days from delivery date, but probably not much longer.

I suspect that George's are engineered a little better.

Brian, I have the same question.  I also need those pesky chevrons.  Almost every '60 DeSoto out there needs them, yet no one has made new ones.  I have searched around and all I have found was George Laurie (in Australia) and he makes new taillights for the '60 DeSoto with the chevrons already in place.  He does not offer the chevrons by themselves.  I don't know why?  Maybe they are cast into the lens on his products and cannot be sold separately?  Otherwise, I have heard good things about his products.

Anyone else out there need these chevrons or know where to get them??

Does anybody know where to get the chevrons for my '60 Desoto's taillights?  Preferably somewhere that wouldn't require taking a second mortgage on my house...
