Re: [FWDLK] 2speed to 3speed pushbotton problem Additional Clarification

I do not believe that it is the cable that is the problem, I think it is more likely that it is a mismatch between the external push button assembly and the internal lever mechanism that attaches to and controls the cable.

I have noted that there is extremely little difference in the appearance and design of these mechanisms between the 56 type layout of the buttons that are arranged in somewhat of a "square" pattern and 59 and later that go horizontal across the dash.

I've also found that mechanically these different assemblies will fit perfectly in either button layout's control boxes.  However they will perform differently.  You can look at them side(square) by side(horizontal) and it is very difficult to see that they are different, but they are.

I am not certain this is Wayne's problem but would carefully check out the possibility of the late buttons being used with the earlier(read horizontal) cable control mechanism or some such mis-configuration.

Incidentally an extremely nice red C 300 just sold at the RM/ASTOR Auction yesterday.  It sold for 180,000.00 including commission.  They have now just sold a 59 black Imperial convert at 270,000.00 plus commission, each restored by Timo Tanskanen.  Also sold was a white 55 C 300, probably a number 3 plus car for 125,000.00 and a number 3 plus white 300 C for 145.000.00, both plus buyers commissions of 10 percent.   These are all ex-Bill Madden cars, except for the Imperial which he still owned.  It appears that some in the world are awakening to the original 300's.

Roger,

It doesn?t make sense to me yet. From what I have been told by 2 separate experts, is that ALL pushbutton assemblies push the cable in & out the same amount, and that ALL cables are the same at the top end. It would not make any sense for Mopar to change these parameters from year to year!

I?d like to hear more about your very long tale how you found this out.

Wayne:

When I said that cable must match push button assembly, this means that the complex lever assembly that is part of the cable assembly must too match the pushbutton assembly.  The 3 components must all be from the same YOM(there could(likely?) be mix and match assemblies of which I am not aware).

Very long tale how I found this out.

Wayne:

I do not know if you figured this out yet.  I suspect that your cable does not match you push button assembly in the YOM(year of manufacturer).  The cable and push buttons in many instances must be from the same year.  In other words you can run a 56 button with a 59 transmission, but the cable assembly must be from a 56 push button assembly.

Might be worth a checkout with the vendor who supplied your new cable.

Subject: [FWDLK] 2speed to 3speed pushbotton problem

Took the Powerflite out of my '59 Dodge and put in a Torqueflite.  Took out the 2spd pushbuttons and put in the 3speed pushbuttons.  Have a new cable from buttons to trans from Imperial Services.  I am not getting enough travel or throw on the cable movement to allow the selector in the trans to fully drop into its detents regardless of cable adjustment.   Now it can't be the new cable is too long or too short because it is still the end distance that matters.   Is there a different ratio on some push button assemblies from different years?   I don't know what my 3spd buttons came from - I had them on the shelf for years.

I'm really baffled on this one.  Suggestions appreciated.
