This is called the “static timing method”. It is described in the shop manual (56 Dodge) right after the normal timing method. It is a must when starting an engine the first time after a rebuild.

 

The time to lock down the distributor is when the points “open”, not close. That is when the spark occurs.

Chuck:

     I timed my 56 Fury with a volt meter.  I set the timing mark on 8 degrees btdc and rotated the distributor until just when the points closed and bolted the distributor in place.  The engine has run perfectly ever since.  I have a power pack cam and that is the setting recommended by the cam maker.
