    One cog off should still give you enough compression for the engine to run but I would go back in and put the valve timing back where it belongs.

    You can get your ignition timing correct like that but your valve timing will still be off. The timing mark on he damper will still be accurate because it is connected to the crankshaft and not affected by the valve timing.

If your timing chain is off one cog on the chain,  should you be able to compensate that with adjusting the distributer either forward or backwards?
