I run the lower pressure radiator cap, when cooling is not an issue,

because I want to "not" have my heater core be the weakest link in the system.

Those pesky heater cores are not easy to replace. Neither is carpet.

Increasing the pressure rating of the radiator cap does not make the engine run cooler. The higher pressure will allow the engine to reach a higher temperature before the cooling system internal pressure overcomes the cap spring and it boils over. If your engine doesn't run on the high end of the temp gage, a 7 lb cap is better because it puts less strain on the hoses and radiator core as the pressure cycles when hot and cold.

     My 56 Fury calls for a 14# cap, but I'm using a 7# cap.  It works fine.  I believe that the 14# cap will allow the engine temperature to stay at a cooler temperature while running the engine at high rpm and out put such as during racing.

     The bottom hose on the radiator is the intake for the water pump.  If it is collapsing, I would suspect the radatior cap to be not releasing the vacuum created when the engine cools off.  Collapse of the bottom hose is prevented by a spring inside. Of course, an old hose will swell and collapse easier than a new one.
