I did exactly this to get a 2.92 gear for my B.  Chrysler did offer such very high ratios for 56 and earlier carriers(torqueflight Imperials sold in the flatlands of Nebraska, you could get 3.08's or some say 09's) but they are impossible to find.  I used a 58 rearend and fit perfectly.  Spring perches distance is about 1/4 different and you must engineer your driveshaft as the pinion on the 58 is different than the 56.  I was unable to find a u-joint combo to resolve the conflict so this is why driveshaft must be cut and spliced. 
 
My solid lifters no longer sound as though they are swapping holes at 70 mph, economy is up and with torqueflight in B, off the line performance is still far better than with powerflight and 3.54 gear.

I put one in a 56 desoto. you have to use the whole rearend. the carriers are different after 56.

Anyone ever put a 57 rear end assy in a 56?   Either carrier or who rearend?
