I've always understood that with a slight drag, you know that the shoes are all even.  After driving just a short distance, two things happen:  The shoes will "work" themselves into the adjusting cams, and the drums will expand from the heat, so they no longer drag.
 
Of course, that's just what I've heard.  By the way, I'm just trying to understand the logic in the statement that the springs around the brake drums are to keep the drums from going out of round.  If that's so, MINE HAVE FAILED MISERABLY!
