Yes you should. Corrosion from moisture in the tank has caused your sending
unit to lose contact internally.  We repair them for $95. Glass bead the
entire unit including inside the pickup tube, epoxy coat the internal parts,
cad coated the external. Also have new sock filters for $7.

With the unit out of the tank & with an ohm meter on the screw  at the
top & the other ohm meter probe on the part that touches the tank
shouldnt I get a variable resistance re victorading when I move the
float up & down?
