Re: [FWDLK] help on 58 PLYMOUTH lower grille

just went and looked at about 7 "skirts' i have in stock and found one of them actually had side-clip 1/4-20 square nuts on it- same used along top edge of the inner fender>fender ledge mounting points. all others had the imprint of the beveled washer 1/4-20 nut assy's i prev. mentioned.
took a pic for you ed!

all my fasteners are at a different location, so you only get to see the nut! not the 2 types of phillips bolts... they are also noted by application for the blank centering tip- to aim into the hole before threads mesh.

they used the washered nuts [i assume] for ease of adjustment- a cagenut or side clipper is rather fixed- the washered nut gives about 3/16" motion in every direction within the square opening.

Sounds weird--like they used that as a last thought.
So basically its a 7/16 hex nut  (1/4-20 inside thread) with a round 1" dia skirt????????

mother mopar could have done better

niether- there were 2 "screws" used.. a stainless phillips 1/4-20 thread screw and the same dimensional screw in chromed steel.  though the "skirt' has a square opening, it wasnt a cage nut, but a pressed nut, with a skirt on it, 7/16 hex, the incorporated "waher/skirt" of the nut is about 1" diameter.  very similar to the spin nuts used to hang fixtures from a drop/grid cieling. all the original cars have these, over the years, i have seen ome repl with fender washers and conventional nuts, or even the same 7/16 nuts with incorporated beveled washer as used to connect the center valance/grill to the outer lower valances via the flush-welded studs of the center portion.- where 57s are supported, unlike 58 with this skirt from the support to valance.

Hello members...

On the 58,,,,The lower grill is screwed/bolted to a 'skirt' at the bottom of the radiator yoke.

There are 2 screw/bolts that go through the lower part of the lower grille and into that 'skirt'

What is the fastener that is mounted in that skirt to accept those 2 screws ?????

I am thinking cage nuts or plastic insert????

THANK YOU
