Re: [FWDLK] 56 v/8

its all relative to rear gearing and tire size-

for instance most of my daily driver fwdlk's run a 3.23 rear- like my 59- with 205-75-14s  i typically tach about 3000 on the highway- at a slow cruising 70ish...  i have 2.76's in my 57- that tachs down around 2500 with H78-14s [27.5" tall i think]
then something like my christine with 3.91s and a 28' tall tire tachs closer to 4000 most of the time- highway cruise speed usually closer to 80 or so- another 58 i run 4.10s and tach over 4000 on long trips with L60 DOTs [28'' tall]

the 56s have [typically] mid-3 gearing- so you're looking at 3500ish rpm on the highway at normal modern-day travel speeds. though i have seen flat 6s and some manual 8's with 3.91s without o/d   had a 58 like that.  my 56 savoy had a 3.54? or so gear- that was a flat6 stick, my 56 savoy with 270/flite was geared higher with a 3.17? gear  oddball ratios

i have an actual chart here that will give engine RPM at a particular speed base on rear gear ratio and tire height. manuals are dead on, autos add about 200 or so RPM for converter slush, and any converter revving below stall can yield a good 20% slip factor
if you use the lockup 727 you picked up- that will be dead on like a manual trans locked in top gear

the trick with iron trans years is to run a powerflite converter ahead of a torqueflite- the stall is about 250rpm higher- to make up for the 1.72 or whatever 1st gear of the 2spd- this gives a performance edge to t/f takeoffs without a slush factor as the stall is still a real low 1500 or 1600 flash rpm

Anyone on the list running a 56 plym with a v/8. Wondering what kind of rpm's your turning on the highway.
And if the motor is screaming going down the road. Debating my next step in my car, whether to replace the 6 cyl with an oem 277 v/8 or a later model small block and a torqueflite trans.

Sorry, I won't open anything like this, especially if there is no explanation at all.

This is the second time I've seen this sort of thing this week on the Forwardlook listserver.

Too many computer viruses and other spyware out there.
