Yes, they only go one way. Also, you may have swapped the left and the right. Part numbers are stamped on the brackets. Odd number = left; even number = right.

Hey guys and gals I hope everyone is going fine today.  My question is: Is there any way that rear bumper brackets can be put on wrong?  Upside down? Left and right?  My rear bumper on  my 58 Plymouth is almost touching the rear brake lights. Any help would be appreciated.
