Re: [FWDLK] RARE 1961 Newport

In 1990 I bought a 60 Fireflite coupe with this 3-speed on the floor.  Also had a 383 and crossrams.  :-)  Manual brakes, seats, steering, and windows, no radio or heater, clear glass and rubber floor mat.  It remains the only 60 DeSoto I have seen with back up light block-off plates.  The car also had 12" brakes.  Bought new by the dealer's son at the dealership in Bellingham, Wa - I suspect this car  either had "strings pulled" to have it built that way, or saw some extra time in "dealer prep" applying a few over-the-counter goodies from the parts dept.

A bear to drive in anything but open road driving.  I was fast as hell.

Don't know how "common" it might be, but I almost bought one of these in the early 80's, but the t-bar crossmember was rusted. It was a 361 w/3 on the floor. I wanted but for nothing else than the "cool factor".

Certainly not common today but probably not that rare either. the Newport
was a bargain basement Chrysler advertised and priced at $2964.00 in 1961.
Most dealers probably stocked only 1 or 2 of the price leader stick shifts
with the hope of stepping people up to the fancier models. If anyone knows
the production figures I am sure they would be of interest. I knew of
several back in the day and they were available for several years. Around
1965 I had the pleasure of driving a co-workers 63 and remember what a nice
refined driving car it was compared with the clumsy 3 on the tree Fords and
Chevys. Dick
