Re: [FWDLK] 58 DODGE D 500 SUPER OPTION, QUESTION.

not exactly related- but i made an interesting [possible] discovery about 58 318s.. a 2bbl and 4bbl engine are listed with the same cam in the motor's repair manual  .405" lift.  the difference was in compression/intake/carb.  doesnt seem logical however to not do a cam upgrade- as 25hp just with extra cfm and a little more squeeze isnt proportional... just as all the hp ratings were very optimistic under many circumstances

That is a totally logical thought. But from what I heard, they used the same cam for 1957 Super D.
Don’t know about 1958.
The logic here could be that the double setup being progressive (with even less cfm during normal operation!, when only the rear (smaller) 4bbl is in operation), the shifting point is raised (easily done, with the rod connection), which makes the engine rev higher, needing more air/fuel mixture. About half-way throttle the second (front, bigger) 4bbl joins in. Both secondary’s are vacuum/contra-weight operated.

It would make no sense to add 650 cfm of fuel mixture over a single 4 and NOT jump the cam up to meet it.

Let see how knowledgeable the gang is on Dodges?

If you ordered a 1958 Dodge Custom Royal with the D 500 Super Package which comes with 2/4 bbl carbs,  is there a difference in the camshaft of the 2 /4 bbl engine and the 1/4 bbl engine. Is there any other difference other than the extra carburetor?

(The answer is not that you get a different manifold and one more air cleaner)
