Re: [FWDLK] 56 Dodge Torqueflite ?

the 56 powerflite must have a different tailshaft than the 57-up type... they made the interchangeability a breeze for '57-up installations/swaps a breeze, the bellhousing mating surface>trans mount location is the same whether TF/PF for 57'up, the only difference for installation was the cable type, linkage, shift mech/buttons/bezel, and ball-and-trunion size. aside from stall speed difference between pf/tf, the bell and converter dont even require a swap. in fact a powerflite converter with powerflite-friendly rear gearing make for a real nice performance upgrade when a t/f is swapped in... nice 1st gear multiplication and a little more stall by approx 300 rpm.
also, if you dont want to go through pressing roller ball pins, etc...  you can simply swap the parking drim from the powerflite onto your torqueflite and use the same driveshaft after a swap. the difference was minimal in pin size, overall was less than 1/4"... i just went through swapping the torqueflite trunion housing onto the p/f driveshaft- pressed the tf crosspin into the pf shaft, balancing it within +/- .001 on center.. worked perfect, but then i played musical park drums on my next trans build... the splines, seal seat etc are identical.. could have simply swapped drums and saved 2 hrs of shop time customizing a driveshaft.... only because i wanted the stepped tube 122"wb wagon shaft instead of putting a straight tube 122" wb shaft out of one of the dodnor desotos or dodges i have set aside...
just pay mind- 57-early 59 drums' seal rides on the drum itself [tailshaft seal]  mid 59-up seal is deeper in the tailshaft and contacts the output shaft- the drum inner hub is unmachined and wont fit earlier trans's.... however you can use the early drum on later trans's with no event- late on early will not seat/install.

Dave,

Thank you for the information on the cast iron Torqueflite and the Powerflite crossmember mounting and the pusbuttons.  I believe I have a couple of those Torqueflite pushbutton bezels in my parts stash; will have to look for them.

Actually, the only unique part needed for a 56 Dodge TF not already used on the late 56 Chryslers is the bezel around the push buttons, in a Dodge style. And the Chrysler bezel will even fit, just looks different. The push button cluster, buttons, shift cable, etc. is the same as already used on the Chrysler. All the parts were available in 56 for a TF in a 56 Dodge. No change to the rear end is required. All 4 of the PF buttons fit in the TF cluster, only the "2" is new.

What I used for the pushbuttons came from a 57 - 59 Dodge truck. These trucks had the same dash structure & pushbutton housing as the 56 trucks, but when the TF option was added in 57, the bezel was made in the 56 style with horizontal bars, if it hadn't already been in existence in case a TF was installed in a 56 Dodge.

There is no factory documentation discussing a TF in a 56 Dodge that I have ever seen. We just know the Chrysler parts fit because they do. Many people have made this conversion. The frame slots for positioning the crossmember brackets for a TF also exist. They are just a few inches behind the PF bracket.

For details on my 56 Dodge's conversion, see my web site at:

Let me take this issue farther.

I was 16 in 1956 and an active member of a family owned Dodge Plymouth Dealership in a small town called Robesonia Pa. We sold 600 to 700 new cars a year and at the end of the model year Chrysler would add accessories and change items that we had not ordered.  I distinctly remember driving our first 56 C.R. 3 speed too see how much faster it was off the line (being a drag racer) in the last 56 model production we received seven or eight Dodge's with torqueflite but no Plymouths.  The five button cluster was in the same housing as the four, but the 1 and 2 were across the bottom where the low button was.  I can positively say that they were factory produced near the end of the model run!  In about three weeks we were receiving our 57 models and 95% were TF so they were  now common place.
