Re: [FWDLK] TRANS FLUID MIXING

as one of the few who still rebuild iron torqueflites i only recommend my customers use type F, as some stated, it has the highest level of friction modifiers and will provide not only firmer shifts, but less slippage in the process [hence firm, positive engagement]
in fact, for many- i am present to adjust the linkage properly and oversee type F utilized.

as for mixing fluids, i do not recommend M/D mixing with F, however true ATF can be mixed with F.

NEVER USE ATF+3 OR MODERN RATED MERCON in original torqueflites, i have seen the detergents/chemicals present in these fluids deteriorate the bonding on original clutches.  this applies to transmissions rebuilt with NOS/pre-80s manufactured clutches.  these fluids protect internal electronics and work differently with modern synthetic linings found in newer trans's and lockup converters.

MORAL OF THE STORY, USE TYPE F.... if you live way up north and plan to drive the car alot below 20degrees ambient temp- you can cut 6 qts of F with 1qt undyed kerosene to thin the fluid.  if it sounds crazy, ask an "old timer"  i think it may even be mentioned in the 57/8 shop manual.

If Rick Ehrenberg is endorsing Type F trannie fluid it could only be,
specifically, for 727 + transmissions and not, specifically, for our
cast iron
models.

Please post up his reference for Type F fluid in FWDLK cars.

George Riehl, who has rebuilt probably more of the 300 CI transmissions than anyone, always recommends F-Type.  I have it in 3 of my 57 and 58 cars and I am very pleased with the shifting quality. The 300 was designed for a crisp fast shift. For a smoother shifting feel then I might not want to use it. It is personal preference.     Marv Raguse
