Or, I should add, access to the wick on the old kerosene headlamps prior to electric ones.

Probably because it's the access to the headlight bulb.

I always thought the term "headlight door" was an odd description for the item, but there must be a reason this is what was established.

Interesting—I stand  (well sit) corrected.  I Have always thought the headlight surrounds just like tail lite and park lite surrounds were bezels.  Never knew of that word till I got into old MoPars years ago

Wonder why they differentiated them from the other items?

The correct term for this item (bezel - rim) is "headlight door".

All 55 Chrysler, Imperial and Desoto models shared the all chrome headlight bezels and the lower model 56’s used them also while the upper models used the new painted bezels.

Hello All

I've had several '55/'56 Chrysler & Imperial cars over the years and still have seven. That said I have found that all '55's had chrome headlight rims and '56's had painted headlight rims. The painted rim is not a chrome one just painted , it is made differently. This is just FYI for what it's worth.

I've always loved '56 Windsors since my old man bought one in '61.  I'm a little suspicious of this one though, there are signs that it has had a quickie used-car-lot style paint job thrown on, as several other aspects of the car show wear around the edges that wasn't corrected.  Both '56 Windsors I've owned had chrome headlight trim rings instead of partially painted like this one, so I wonder if they're trying to cover up pitting, etc.
