Re: [FWDLK] Lack of glass bowl fuel filter and hard starting

Dave,

I can't see where a glass bowl fuel filter makes any difference. My car has one with dual WCFBs. If there is fuel in the carbs, it starts instantly, but that is due to the high voltage ignition coil. It will fire any fuel/air ratio mixture.

If the car has been sitting for a long time, like over the winter, the carbs are dry. The starter must turn over about 10 seconds to pump enough fuel into the carbs to start. I like to crank it for about 10 seconds and then stop, so when I set the choke, the accelerator pump diaphragm is not running on dry walls of the pump well and it makes a full shot of fuel. One stroke, one start.

I thought about using an electric pump so I wouldn't need the 10 seconds of cranking to pump fuel. But I decided that the cranking pumps oil into the bearings, lifters etc., and builds oil pressure up to 40+ lbs. Better than starting an engine quickly with no oil anywhere after draining down all winter.

The only advantage (other than filtering fuel) I see to a glass bowl filter is it may help to dampen the pressure pulses from a mechanical pump. Mine always has a little air trapped at the top, which should compress under a pressure pulse and then provide a continuous pressure to push the fuel through the needle & seat with a more even flow.

Just wanted to do a little poll. For those of you with the hard start problems being discussed recently, do you still have the glass bowl filter installed? I had the same issues, but a fellow forward looker suggested it was due to my missing glass bowl filter. True enough, since I reinstalled one, the problem is resolved.
